4th Jan 2021
It is with a sense of utter shock and huge sadness that we have just learned of the sudden and unexpected passing on 29th December 2020 of Shaw Murray of Alva, son of the legendary Willie Murray who was our Guest of Honour in 2007.
Shaw was an Alva man through and through and took a keen interest in all that was going on in and around the town. He and his family were loyal supporters of the Games and, on the death of Willie, not only continued Willie's support of the Open 200 metres foot race but inaugurated the W Shaw of Alva (Willie's running name) Trophy to be presented to the local athlete judged to have put in the most meritorious performance on the day. In a gesture typical of the family, this has been presented annually by different family members.
Shaw enjoyed his annual skiing holidays with his wife Christina and he also attended and endured many a match at Recreation Park on a Saturday afternoon but not on Games day, when he and the wider family would occupy their traditional seats on the bend away from the finishing line, surveying all before them and making that all important decision as to who was to receive the W Shaw Trophy.
On behalf of all of the Games Committee, we would like to offer to Christina, Alasdair, Angela and all of the wider family our deepest and genuinely heartfelt condolences on this tragic and devastating news.
