The Games Committee was deeply saddened to learn of the death earlier today of the Reverend George Sherry, former Minister of Menstrie Parish Church, Guest of Honour at the 2012 Games and more recently a resident of the town.
George was a passionate supporter of our 5 a side football competition over many years, regularly attending and overseeing the matches and, on occasion, refereeing the odd game or two, resplendent in the track suit of his beloved Motherwell FC. A close friend of our Life Chairman Ken McCaffrey, both served with distinction as Chaplains to Glenochil prison and became firm friends.
Failing health restricted George's own personal activities including his love of bowling but he remained a very good friend of Alva Games and retained his sharp wit and sense of humour throughout. Our sympathies are extended to his wife Maggie and to his wider family at this very difficult time.
