The Games committee was truly saddened to read earlier tonight of the passing of one of the most colourful and entertaining sons of the Town, and former Games Committee Office Bearer, Charlie Paterson. He and brother Tom, the Guest of Honour in 2019, were both previously on the Committee with Tom also the commentator at Alva and elsewhere across the circuit.
Both attended Games all over the country and such was Charlie's personality that he was still spoken of fondly and warmly many years after he had ceased to fulfil that role. A nurse in his day time, he and brother Tom were one of the funniest comedy double acts on the circuit and to say that Charlie had the gift of the gab would have been an understatement. Both were called upon regularly to speak on the after dinner circuit and especially at Burns Suppers where they would leave their audiences in tears of laughter.
Charlie was last at the Games when they themselves were last on in 2019 to witness Tom discharge his role as Guest of Honour, even although Charlie was already in declining health at the time. It was heartwarming to see him there and to see so many people going over to speak to him and share a tale or two throughout the afternoon.
He was a truly superb raconteur and a natural comedian - a one-off. The thoughts of the Committee are with the whole of the Paterson family tonight but it is hoped that they will be able to draw some comfort from knowing that he held a special place in the hearts and minds of all of the people with whom he came into contact during his time with us.
The funeral will take place at 10am on Monday 30th May 2022 at Alva Parish Church and thereafter to Alva Cemetery.
