22nd Aug 2014
The Annual General Meeting of the Alva Games Committee took place tonight in St John Vianney Church Hall, East Stirling Street, Alva. All of the existing Committee members were in attendance. The Chairman welcomed all and thanked everyone, Committee or otherwise, who had contributed to the continuing success of the Games. He singled out for praise those who helped out at the prize bingo evenings which are still the largest single source of income for the Games.
Although the weather had been desperately cruel from about the half way point on the day, with the dancing having been forced to go indoors to the Ochil Leisure Centre, the numbers of spectators remaining on field was remarkably good and the competition was as fierce as ever. 57 (fool?)hardy souls took to Torry in the Hill Race and a new Champion crowned. The Secretary aligned himself with the Chairman's words of thanks.
Most interest was reserved for the Treasurer's Report. He highlighted that the expenditure for the year just ended had exceeded £21,000 for the first time, including the increased prize fund. Core sponsorship had held up well with many of our sponsors returning year after year. New sponsors Handelsbanken, Brian Marantelli of Melbourne, Australia and returning Co-op Funeralcare were all welcomed and thanked. There had been unusually high levels of capital expenditure this year including the new polo shirts, Games ties and the new changing tent for the dancers, which ended up having a slightly different use on the day! The Games had run overall at a loss but one which could have been a whole lot worse in the appalling rain of the late afternoon.
All Committee members were re-elected and everyone began by throwing themselves into the organisation for the 159th Games next July. Guests of Honour for 2015 were confirmed as retiring Heavyweight events Judge, Alex Webster and his wife, Ethel, both former members of the Forfar Games Committee, Scottish Highland Games Association and both long serving and loyal supporters of Alva.
All future Committee and Annual meetings will now take place on a Wednesday evening rather than a Sunday. Details will be posted on this site.
Games Chairman, Councillor Derek Stewart, said that "The 2014 Games had been a very enjoyable day, even in the rain and the invited Guests, including the recently appointed Lord Lieutenant Johnny Stewart and his family had all commented upon the professionalism of the event and the entertainment which it offered. They will all be back next July".
More news will be posted on this site throughout the year.
