Games President is Citizen of the Year 2006

2nd Nov 2006

The winner of the Lord Lieutenant's Award for Clackmannanshire citizen of the year 2006 is Alva Games President, Campbell Lyon. At a packed Alloa Town Hall tonight, Campbell received the award from The Earl of Mar & Kellie in his customary humble fashion and sought to deflect attention from his own magnificent efforts in a tenure on the committee of over 50 years.

From his beginnings as a day assistant in the early 1950's, Campbell has undertaken every task from collecting sponsorship to building the arena and laying the track, a task he still performs even although he is now in his 70's. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of local highland games and their history and is well known and respected throughout the country - and beyond - as a result. He was elected Honorary Life President of the Games to mark his (then) record long service and presided with pride at the AGM on Sunday of last week when the annual question of "Games or no Games?" was answered with a resounding and unanimous "Yes!!".

All of us on the Committee congratulate Campbell on this well deserved public and civic recognition of a life time's devotion to the Games. Long may it continue.
