150th Games a Triumph

9th Jul 2006

The 150th celebration of the Famous Alva Games was hailed as a huge success last night by Games Chairman, Ken McCaffrey.

He could hardly keep the smile from his face as he reflected on the numbers of competitors who took part including 140 dancers from around the globe and a record entry of 51 in the Championship Hill Race. Looking back on the day Ken said "This has been by far the most successful Alva Games since I joined the commitee and is a truly fitting tribute on this 150th anniversary. I have never seen so many people in the crowd and was delighted to see that they remained until the very last runner crossed the line, each and every one of them contributing to the unique atmosphere in the games arena. I have to mention two new events this year in the schools relay races and tug o'war contest. These proved an immediate hit with the local primary schools and the numbers who took part assure me that there is a future for our games".

"I would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to making this celebration the success which it was and hope that those who came along will all return next year for our 151st games"

Pictures of the day are now in the Gallery section and full results are all on the results pages of this website. The Exhibition "150 Years of the Famous Alva Games" ran until September 10th. Although the full exhibition has now closed, the historical panels with much information and pictures remain on display in the Mill Trail Visitor Centre, West Stirling Street. Free entry.
