150th Games a Triumph

9th Jul 2006

The 150th celebration of the Famous Alva Games was hailed as a triumph by Games Chairman Ken McCaffrey on Saturday evening.

With record numbers of entries in the various competitions including 140 dancers and a spectacular 51 in the Championship Hill Race, the Chairman was left with a broad smile on his face as he reflected on the successes of the day. Although the sun popped out only occasionally from behind the clouds, the day was largely dry and a huge crowd enjoyed the very best of athletic and dancing achievement.

Ken said " I was delighted to see so many people enjoying the whole programme of events, particularly in the first time events of schools tug o'war and relay races. A massive amount of work has gone in to preparing for this day and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to making this day the success which it has been. Our programme ran for over 5 hours and the crowd stayed until the very end of proceedings adding to the electric atmosphere in the arena".

Pictures of the day will appear shortly in the Gallery section of this website and the 150 years of Alva Games Exhibition will run throughout the rest of the summer in the Mill Trail Visitor Centre adjacent to the park. It is free, so please pop in and compare and contrast the games of yesteryear with the games of 2006.
